Nick DidkovskyNick Didkovsky is a guitarist, composer, and software developer. In 1983, he founded the avant-rock septet Doctor Nerve. Doctor Nerve joins the furious energy of rock with intricate composition, some of which finds its origins in rich software systems of his own design. Nick’s other ensembles include the Fred Frith Guitar Quartet, the multimedia improvising trio Shadow Puppies (with Hans Tammen and Kurt Ralske), and the rock trio Bone with Hugh Hopper and John Roulat. With Phil Burk, Didkovsky created JMSL (Java Music Specification Language), an experimental music composition language written in the Java programming language. His non-didactic approach to combining human and machine creativity pushes the boundaries of rock, algorithmic composition, and contemporary music. As a composer, Didkovsky has had works commissioned by Meridian Arts Ensemble, New Century Players, ARTE Saxophone Quartet, Bang On A Can All-Stars, Kathleen Supove, Steve Schick/Maya Beiser Project, and Sirius String Quartet. He presently resides in New York City with his wife and two children, where he composes and performs, writes software for a neurobiology lab at Rockefeller University, and teaches Java Music Systems at Columbia University and New York University.
